Awarding ceremony for Prizes and Grants

The awarding ceremony for prizes and grants of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans took place on the 26th of April, 2012. Within the frame of this ceremony, the Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Foundation gave the awards and grants annually announced:

 

The Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Prize is awarded annually to a mathematical monograph of an expository nature that must be written in English and introduce the latest developments in an active research area in Mathematics, where advances have been made recently. It amounts to 15.000 euros and the winning monograph is published by Birkhäuser Verlag in the series "Progress in Mathematics".

 

The awarded work was the monograph «Complex Kleinian Groups» by Professors Ángel Cano (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México), Juan Pablo Navarrete (Universidad Autónoma de Yucatán) and José Seade (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México).

 

The Ferran Sunyer i Balaguer Grants are offered annually to advanced PhD university students from the Catalan-speaking countries in order to spend from 1 to 3 months in a foreign research centre. These Grants have been awarded to:

  • Elona Agora, Karlstads Universitet (Sweden)
  • Míriam Alcalà Vicente, Università di Milano (Italy)
  • Joan Bosa Puigredon, Purdue University (United States)
  • Nuno R. Barroso Freitas, King’s College London (United Kingdom)
  • Jordi Serra Musach, EMBL-EBI (European Bioinformatics Institute) (United Kingdom)

TheMathematics and Society Prize is awarded to a report about any mathematical issue produced by a media from the Catalan-speaking countries. The journalist Josep Corbella Domènech was awarded for the series of widespread articles “The Mathematical Brain”. This series of articles have been published in the pages of “Life in Summer” of the newspaper La Vanguardia during forty-two days, from the 24th of July to the 4th of September, 2011, together with a problem of the “Cangur” tests and its solution published in the next day.
